Edith “Joan” Wilkie (née Chalmers)

Edith Joan Wilkie, known to most as Joan, passed away on 25 April 2026, at the age of 94, with family at her side.

Joan was married to her husband, Ernie, for 70 years. Together they raised three children: Allan (Beverly), Karen (Doug), and Kelly (Ed). Their family grew to include seven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Kay and Kelly, her sister Marg, her son Al, and her granddaughter Laura.

Joan was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, though she spent most of her adult life in Winnipeg, where she built a life centered on family, friendship, and community. She found great fulfillment in her work as a nurse, a career that suited her caring nature.

For many years, Joan was a resident of St. James. She later lived at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence before moving to Oakview Personal Care Home.

She valued her time spent with family and cherished staying connected with loved ones, as well as socializing with many friends that she had throughout her life. She took great pride in tending to her garden on Deer Lodge Place, and friends and family delighted in the harvests she generously shared. Her dill pickles were the best! Time at the cottage, girls’ trips to Las Vegas, dominoes, and bridge club all kept Joan busy. Joan was kind and quick-witted, with a heart of gold and a twinkle in her eye.

Joan’s family extends sincere thanks to the friends, family, and care staff all who were such an important part of her life.

At Joan’s request, no funeral service is planned.

LORI DEBBY BLATCH

Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer; it is with deep regret that we announce the death of Lori Debby Blatch. On Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Women's Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 51 years. She is survived by her spouse Andre Waldner Sr of 27 years together, her two sons Andre Jr and Silas, mother Pat Neiser, sisters Tricia, Tina, Vicki; brothers Albert, Brad, Dylan; nieces Amber, Amy, Angel; great nieces Trinity, Hazel and Sabreena; nephews Tristan, Grayson, James, Austin and Slater; cousins Cheyanne and Kolten. She is predeceased by her Father Allan Albert Blatch.

Lori was such an amazing mother, sister, aunty, wife and friend. She loved to cook, bake, spend time with her boys and she was the best stay at home mom. Lori loved watching movies and spending time with family.

Lori always had such beautiful long hair and nails but she shined from within - so sweet and always caring for her family. She loved to journal and write everything down. She attended University studying social work.

Lori had such a great sense of humour and adventure... more of a daytripper with loved ones going to the movies and concerts, heading out the lake and sharing conversation around a fire. In her younger days she was often with her best friend Melissa.

She enjoyed thrift shopping and long conversations on the phone with her mother. Family was always the most important part of Lori's life.

Her funeral service will be at the Polish Manor at 300 Selkirk Avenue on Wednesday, May 6 at 2 pm.

Thank you to our family and friends for all your support and love. Lori felt that love and it will forever remain a part of her story.

STEPHEN DANIEL PAUL (PAUL) DEVIAENE
JANUARY 28, 1953 – APRIL 19, 2026

Sadly, Paul’s family is announcing his unexpected passing on Sunday, April 19th.

Left to mourn are sisters Barbara, Donna (Brent), and brothers Donald (Bonnie), Louis and Lorne as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Paul was predeceased by his parents Jean and Stephen, and younger brother Michael.

Paul aspired to become an architect and studied Environmental Sciences at the University of Manitoba. A limited enrolment in the architecture program took him to Red River College where he trained as a draftsman. He worked for Vipond, a fire protection company for most of his professional career. In his early years with the company, he worked on the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau and the Parliament building in Newfoundland. Throughout his life he continued to recount fond memories of those work experiences.

As a child he was always building something in the backyard. This desire to build continued into adulthood and in the 1990’s, he, along with his father and brothers, built a cabin for the family at Big Whiteshell Lake. The cabin will stand as a lasting part of his legacy and will hold many fond memories for years to come.

Paul played football as a youth and was a lifelong fan of the game. He enjoyed watching the Blue Bombers with his brothers and had season tickets for many years. He had an eclectic knowledge and interest in things that spanned the gamut from old movies to military vehicles. Over the years he shared his home with brothers Michael and Louis as well as three cats. His cats held a special place in his heart. He leaves behind Taz, who is no doubt confused by his sudden absence.

Paul experienced many health issues over the past two decades and his failing health prevented him from living life more fully. Now his struggle is over.

Rest in peace dear brother.

A special thank you to Louis who became his caregiver these past few years.

LENORE DIANE KATHERINE KIZNEY (NEE CISAR)

It is with great sadness and heartbreak that we announce the death of my wife Lenore, soul mate, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba, less than a month short of her 80th birthday.

Lenore lived her entire life in Winnipeg but enjoyed spending time at her cottage in Lake of the Woods, and vacation time in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, Honilulu, Hawaii and Las Vegas.

Left to grieve are Ron Kizney, her husband of 60 years; her daughter Kimberly Michelle Kizney, granddaughter Kathleen Mae Cruden; nephews Bruce McDonald (Laurie) Huntington Beach, CA, Brian McDonald (Ardie) Woodland Hills, CA, niece Nicole Perron, Maple Ridge, BC, grand nephews Iam McDonald and Ellis McDonald LOs Angeles CA, grand niece Hailey Bull, Maple Ridge BC, godson Michael Dale, Winnipeg, and "the sister that she chose" Pat Reff (Joe) St Albert, Alberta as well as so many dear friends that she made throughout her life.

Lenore was predeceased by her parents Myron and Helena Czar, stepbrother Alex Cisar, and her dear sister, Anna McDonald.

Lenore enjoyed a fabulous career in travel that spanned over 25 years in sales, reservations, and operations, with industry leaders such as Sunflight Vacation, Geography Club Holidays, Touram, Air Canada Vacations and Canada 3000 Holidays. It gave her the opportunity to travel the world and experience wonders most peolple only dream about. She walked the Great Wall of China, sailed the Yangtze River, road an Elephant in India, walked barefoot along the Seine in Paris at night, saw the Cherry Blossoms in Japan, to name a few, but even more thrilling, catching Wlleye at the lake.

Cremation will take palce Tuesday, April 28, 2026 with only family present. There will be a Mass in her honour in early May at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Avenue, Winnipeg. Any wishibg to do so are invited to attend.

HELEN IVEY GITTEL (NEE LAWSON)
27 JUNE 1934 – 17 APRIL 2026

Helen’s Faith became Sight as she died peacefully following a short stay at Oakview Place Personal Care Home, early on the morning of Friday 17 April, 2026 into her 92ND year, after a rapid decline from dementia over the past two years.

Helen will be lovingly remembered by her Son and Caregiver Paul Gittel of Winnipeg, and her younger sister Phyllis Austin of Milk River, Alberta along with numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear family and friends throughout Canada from coast to coast.

Helen was predeceased by her husband Arch and her eldest son David. Also predeceasing her were her parents Bert and Phyllis Lawson, older brothers Clarke, Murray, Ross and Elmer.

Helen and Arch were married in Calgary in 1955 and ended up moving to Winnipeg later that same year following various eastern Canadian RCAF postings as Arch then concluded his Regular Air Force Service in 1957, prior to joining Trans Canada Airlines, later known as Air Canada. Once in Winnipeg, they became members of Broadway First Baptist Church. Helen’s delight was to become a Wife and Mother. She found great maternal satisfaction and reward in being a happy stay at home Mom and Homemaker, always grateful that Arch’s faithful and loving support made that possible as they raised their two boys together as a Family. They all enjoyed many wonderful adventures travelling both within Canada and to other countries, sampling different cultures, foods and scenic vistas.

In the late Autumn of 2025, following a nocturnal fall, it became apparent that 24-hour care was a necessity and after a brief stay at the Grace Hospital Emergency, Helen was transferred to the Transitional Care Unit at the Misericordia Hospital at 99 Cornish Avenue. In early January of 2026, Helen was transferred to the Oakview Place Personal Care Home at 2395 Ness Avenue where she remained until her passing. In all those facilities, Helen was given wonderful gracious care and support by all the heroes who serve so faithfully there in their many diverse capacities. Despite her decline from dementia, Helen retained her recognition of Paul and her characteristic gracious genuine politeness when interacting with all those who were caring for her, amidst her many needs.

There will be a Celebration of Helen’s Life and Christian Faith at a later date. At a future date, Helen’s ashes will be taken to Calgary to be placed within Arch’s plot, also very near to David's.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation. 1 Peter 1:3-5 KJV

ALMA JUNE FOWLER

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Alma Fowler. She passed away peacefully on April 16, 2026 at Calvary Place Personal Care Home.

Beloved mother of Paul McClinchey (RoseMarie) & Paula Henley (Sam Klack). Cherished grandmother to Tara, Mallory, Jeremy (Amanda) & Rachel (Dustin) and loving great grandmother to Vaughn & Leightyn.

She is survived by her sister Carol Crane (late Arthur Crane), her nephew Gerry Carter (Suzanne).

Predeceased by mother and father (Frank & Florence Fowler) , sister and brother-in-law (Donna and Art Carter), brother-in-law of Carol Crane (Arthur Crane) and her niece (Janice Brevik), great-grandchildren (Liam Hagen and Londyn Clegg).

Alma retired at the Grace Hospital at the age of 76 years old. She loved working with all the special people she called her friends.

In those 35 years she had many passions; Every year she attended the Winnipeg Folk Festival. She loved music and she enjoyed going to concerts. Her music spanned from seeing the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, to Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.

Our mother loved to travel. Her highlights were New Orleans, New York City and Italy, with many more places in between.

When she wasn’t busy doing all those things, she always had a project going on at home. She fixed her house to represent the artsy person she was.

Mom loved all those things, but she truly loved her family and she loved her dogs.

We will miss our mother deeply every day. Until we meet again!

We would like to thank Calvary Place Care Home for taking special care for her last 6 months of life.

Special thanks to WHRA Palliative Care for supporting Paul and Paula in her home for over a year. It meant so much to be able to let our mom live in her home until we couldn’t no longer.

Michel (Mitch) Francois Dubé

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden death of Michel Francois Dubé, beloved father, grandfather, husband, son, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend.

At St. Boniface Hospital, on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the age of 56, Michel passed away suddenly from this life to the next with strong hope and faith in God’s warm embrace.

Michel is survived by his wife, Chantalle Dubé (née Lafrenière), his six children: Vincent, Jean-Paul (Suzette Doiron), Rémi, Gaëtan, Kateri, and Damien, as well as his granddaughter, Lillian, and second grandchild to be born in early June. He also leaves to mourn his mother and father, Carmel (née Therrien) and Albert Dubé, his brothers, André (Rhonda Matheson) Dubé and Guy (Shannon Gratton) Dubé, mother and father in law, Aline (née Bandet) and Jérôme Lafrenière, sisters and brothers in law Nicole Lafrenière (Francois Godère), Suzanne (Jean-Marie) Humair, and Guy Lafrenière, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, godchildren, and dear friends.

He was predeceased by their two miscarried children, Gabriele and Pascale, his grandparents, Herménégilde and Elizabeth (née Girouard) Dubé, Joseph and Rosa (née Jeanson) Therrien, aunt Gérarda (née Therrien) and uncle Kenneth Jonson, uncle Gérard Therrien, aunt Diane (née Freynet) Therrien, aunt Patricia Dubé, aunt Jeanne (née Landry) Beaudoin, and cousin Mark Jonson.

Mitch was born on July 23, 1969, and was raised in Windsor Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba. He spent his life devoted to his family and his Catholic faith. As a child, Mitch attended École Lacerte School and Collège Louis Riel High School, where he made many lifelong friends whom he cherished. He went on to post-secondary school at Collège Universitaire de St. Boniface, where he studied business administration.

As a child, Michel enjoyed time with his family, particularly while camping, travelling across Canada, and spending many days at the family cabin in Redditt, Ontario. Mitch participated in Les Scouts Canada, enjoyed movies and reading, played soccer, and got into many shenanigans and adventures with his brothers.

Mitch entered the workforce as a young adult, first at various Shell Gas Stations for several years, where he worked his way up to supervisor. From there, Mitch began his career at Canadian National Railway, first as a Customer Service Representative, in many other positions over the years, and most recently as Supervisor Procurement, Supply Management, and Workforce Operations. He was well known and respected at CN and proudly received his 30 years of service pin this past February 2026.

Michel married Chantalle on August 23, 1997, and together they raised their six children in Southdale, Winnipeg. His greatest achievement in life was being a Papa and Pa. His love and pride for his children and grandchildren was endless, and many people can attest to how often he bragged about his kids and granddaughter.

As an adult, Mitch played for many years on a Co-Ed Slo-Pitch team with Chantalle, enjoyed watching and discussing with his sons the Winnipeg Jets and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, participating in fantasy football leagues (where he often took first place), playing video games and board games, eating delicious food, and spending time with family and friends. Our family will always cherish time spent with Papa around the table, especially on fondue nights.

Our family wishes to thank all staff at St. Boniface Hospital, especially those who cared for Papa directly in his final hours. We are forever grateful for their kindness, professionalism, and excellent care. We wish to also thank all staff at CN, in particular his supervisor, Michelle Stephens, for her friendship, love, and support. As well, we wish to extend our thanks to all those who have come by the house, and those who organized and participated in the meal train. And lastly, we thank Louise and Rachel and all those at Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel for their incredible compassion and understanding as we navigate this difficult time.

Our voices are united in praise and worship, as Papa always loved to hear us sing together. We take consolation in the Hope of the Resurrection and look forward with joy to our reunion with Papa in Heaven one day.

All are welcome to join with us in prayer for Michel’s soul at the following events:

A come and go public viewing and visitation will be taking place at Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 7 - 8 pm.

The Funeral will be held at Paroisse St. Martyrs Canadiens, 289 Dussault Avenue, Winnipeg, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, with closed casket viewing beginning at 12:00 noon, eulogies at 12:30 pm, and Funeral Mass at 1:00 pm. Luncheon to follow in the church hall.

“For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

________________________________________

Patricia (Pat) Maksymchuk, aged 71, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away suddenly on April 15, 2026. Pat was born on July 12, 1954, in Arborg, Manitoba, to Fred and Pauline Zuk.

Pat spent most of her life in Dauphin, Manitoba, where she built a loving home with her husband, William (Bill) Maksymchuk. Together, they raised their two daughters, April and Susan. She was a devoted wife and a dedicated stay-at-home mother for many years, always putting her family first.

Pat had a deep love for being connected to nature. She found joy in being outdoors, especially in her greenhouse and large garden, where she created and maintained beautiful flowers throughout the yard. She also loved crocheting, baking her famous sticky buns, and spending time with friends and family. Her baking was well known in the community, and many looked forward to her homemade goods at the local farmers’ market.
