SHIRLEY ANNE MACKAY

(NEE HAGGLUND)

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Anne MacKay on February 18, 2021 at the age of 87 years.

Shirley was born on August 12, 1933 in Lashburn, Saskatchewan to Anna and Hjalmar Hagglund and was married for 58 wonderful years to the love of her life, Neil MacKay until his passing in 2015.

Mom’s memory will be forever cherished by her three children, Donna (Marty) Polychuk, Gord (Clare) MacKay and Sandra (Jason) Rauhaus. Grandma will be deeply missed by her grandchildren Kyle (Deanna) and Kevin Polychuk, Quinn and Mahri MacKay, and Mark and James Rauhaus. Mom also leaves to mourn her loving sister Jean Brooks, sisters-in-law Florence MacKay and Margaret Hagglund as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents Hjalmar and Anna Hagglund, her brother Howard and sister-in-law Helen, and brothers-in-law Bill Brooks, Stewart (Elsie) McKay and Alex MacKay.

Shirley was educated in Clanwilliam Grey School, Minnedosa Collegiate and Manitoba Provincial Normal School (Teachers College) where she graduated in 1951. After graduating, she enjoyed teaching in Silverton, Minnedosa and the Winnipeg School Division.

Shirley and Neil were married June 29, 1957. Shirley married the boy across the street and began a lifetime full of love and happiness. Mom was always extremely active in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives, as well as her community. Her interests were extensive and spanned many years. This included over 50 years of curling at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club with many great lifelong friends. Mom also enjoyed many years of golfing, gardening, playing bridge and was a Life Member of the Kirkfield Park United Church. She was also very involved with Ducks Unlimited and the Rotary Club. She truly touched many lives. Many happy family memories will be remembered camping at Blue Lake, fishing at Lake of the Woods and exploring the beauty of NW Ontario and Manitoba. Family always came first for Mom.  Her grandchildren loved every moment they spent with their Grandma. She always had activities planned and hugs to give. Mom always said, “Aren’t we lucky to have such a great family”.  She will forever be missed.

Cremation has taken place.  In accordance with Shirley’s wishes, there will be no service.  When we are able to gather, a celebration of life will occur.
