DONALD ALBERT BOEHMER
Peacefully on May 27, 2025, Donald Boehmer passed away at Sturgeon Creek 1 Retirement Residence at the age of 91 years.
Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mabel, two children, daughter Carol in Denver, Colorado, and son Mark
and wife Rachel of Oakville, Ontario but presently in Switzerland for two years, granddaughter Daphne, of Oakville, Ontario and grandson Francis of Montreal, Quebec. Don is predeceased by his parents Albert F. Boehmer and Emma Louise Gogolin (Boehmer) Stowe, sisters Dorothy Mulligan and Beverley Milton and brothers Gordon and Melville.
Don was born in the family home in Ottawa on February 10, 1934. His father passed away in 1945 and his mother remarried and moved west in 1948. This relocation had a profound effect on Don. On completion of schooling he endeavoured to travel as much as possible. His five years in the RCAF Reserve provided him with the opportunity to visit all provinces and the Yukon Territory in Canada. Over ten years employment with Cunard Steam-Ship Company further increased his travel opportunities. In 1991 after 25 years’ service with the Federal Government, he took early retirement from Environment Canada. In his position as Regional Manager Human Resources he traveled extensively throughout Western Canada and the Canadian Arctic. After retirement Don and Mabel spent many winters in Mesa Arizona in their RV or rented trailers. The vacations Don enjoyed the most
were when the children were small and the family went camping. He often said the children got into just enough
trouble to keep him out of trouble.
In 2002 Mabel and Don sold their house in Westwood and moved into a new life lease complex and became involved in organizing the tenant’s association. Don started to lobby through the Manitoba Society of Seniors to improve tenant rights under the Manitoba Life Leases Act. Some improvements were achieved in 2005 and since then he was involved with the organization of the Manitoba Life Lease Occupants Association to further encourage both the government and the owners of life leases to protect tenant investments and quality of life. Since moving into the life-lease Don and Mabel have spent many winter vacations in Victoria, B.C.
The last years of Don’s life were at Sturgeon Creek 1 Retirement Residence where he received valuable care.
Cremation has taken place and Don’s ashes will be interned in the family plot at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa
at a later date. Don has requested a celebration of his life be held at Messiah Lutheran Church. Details at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
