WILLIAM MCGARVA
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill McGarva on August 29, 2019 with family by his side.
Bill was born in Winnipeg on September 23, 1943. The family lived on Maryland Street until 1958. He attended John M. King and General Wolfe Schools. Friendships were made during these early years that continued to this day. His Free Press route from Ellice Ave. to Portage Ave. was how Bill saved enough carrier income to buy his prized used three speed Raleigh bicycle. High school was Daniel McIntyre. These were the days of hanging out and just enough study time to graduate in 1961.
In 1965 Alice entered Bill’s life and they were married on October 15, 1966. A side benefit to this wonderful marriage was his introduction to farm life at Alice’s parents place near Anola. This is where fun things were always an integral part of farm activities. Around this time Bill’s parents bought a cottage at Twin Beaches, which also resulted in many memorable times.
Bill, a Chartered Professional Accountant had careers with the Government of Canada and the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba. Many “special” friendships were developed at these workplaces.
Since 1982 Bill and Alice’s pride and joy was their home in Woodhaven. Simple pleasures were always on the menu at this household. The daily Jumbo quiz, card games and yard games were always an enjoyable part of home life, especially when friends and family visited.
Bill was always keen on travel. Favourite destinations included Hawaii, Florida, California, Las Vegas and many more. Whether curling, golfing, slow pitch, baseball or pickle ball, Bill’s understated wit and genuine compassion always won over new groups of friends.
Bill’s stoic outlook and positive handling of life’s medical detours only brought added respect for this remarkable, husband, brother and friend.
Alongside Alice, Bill is survived by sisters Margaret Newton, Dorothy Herron (Sheldon); brother Don and sister in law Pat, plus eight super nieces and nephews and their much-loved cat Corky. He was predeceased by his parents Bill and Sally, his brother Gordon earlier this year and brother in law Bud Newton.
A private celebration of life will be held at Anavets Assiniboia Unit 283, 3584 Portage Ave. from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Friday September 27, 2019.
A special thanks to all relatives and friends who have helped us at this difficult time.
Donations in memory of Bill could be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, Cancer Care Manitoba, or a charity of choice.
