VERNON (VERN) BARRIE YOUNG

August 26, 1941- December 1, 2020

Vern Young of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away December 1, 2020 at Golden Links Lodge at the age of 79. He leaves behind his wife Geraldine Young, their children Shawn Young (Betty-Jo), Breck Young and Shelan Ennis (David), his grandchildren Nicholas Ennis (Shaina), Casslynn Ennis, Melody Ennis and Neve Young, as well as a great granddaughter Aela Ennis.

Vern was born in Flin Flon Manitoba, to Robert (Bob) and Phyllis Young. He spent his entire career with the Canadian National Railway. Working for the railway had its perks and challenges. Vern moved to a new province every five years or so with his family in tow, from British Colombia to Quebec and spending time in every province in between. He gave us the opportunity to see and live all of what this vast and generous country has to offer. He lived life to its fullest, taking every opportunity to enjoy the moment and be the entertainer. Our fondest memories of Vern will be by the campfire with his ukulele. That was Vern’s magic. He was actively involved in both the Kinsmen and Lion’s Clubs of Canada. He eventually settled in Saskatoon where he retired. In 2015 Vern and Geraldine moved back to Winnipeg to be closer to their family. He spent many evenings watching his grandchildren play soccer, hockey and many other sports, even sitting through long piano recitals…probably wishing he had his ukulele! He spent nearly two years at the Riverside Lion’s Manor where the staff recognized and enabled Vern’s magic. He sang karaoke to a welcoming crowd daily, often twice a day. He was living his dream. He then moved to the Golden Links Lodge until his passing. We are eternally grateful for the sympathetic, and caring staff at the Golden Links Lodge who provided the freedom that he enjoyed and support that he needed.

Vern was predeceased by his parents as well as by his sister Diane Haddad (Len).

In lieu of flowers, family is asking for donations to be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a hospital foundation of your choosing.
