Tom Dodds
May 12, 1948 – Oct 6, 2026
After a brief battle with cancer, Tom passed away peacefully on October 6, 2026, surrounded by Jane, Matthew and Cassandra.
Tom was born in Carlyle, Saskatchewan to Jean and Alex Dodds. From an early age Tom’s first true love was horses. He began with gymkhana and rodeo before turning to show horses upon moving to Regina for University. It was there at the Regina Pony Club he met some of his favourite lifelong friends. Tom subsequently worked at the racetrack as a farrier, which then led him to his full-time career as a successful thoroughbred racehorse trainer. His career began in Winnipeg and later took him to racetracks across Western Canada and the United States. In 1986, “Doddsy” settled back in Brunkild, Manitoba, and went on to become Assiniboia Downs’ leading trainer five times.
Tom was a hardworking, kind-hearted, honest and fair man who was regarded by his peers as a great horseman. He loved an honest horse, whether it was a cheap claimer or a stakes horse, and he felt much the same way about the people he met throughout his life.
In retirement Tom found a new passion on the golf course. His competitive spirit never faded, and he continued to enjoy the camaraderie of sport. In true Tom fashion, he leaves the world a winner, having come out on top in his final golf match with Jane.
Tom will be deeply missed by his best friend and partner of 44 years Jane, his son Matthew, of whom he was so very proud, and his daughter-in-law Cassandra, his favourite city girl. He will also be missed by his brother-in-law Doug, the master chef, and sister-in-law Jaime, the amateur sommelier, with whom he shared many wonderful memories filled with good times, much laughter and hospitality. He also leaves behind his brother Duncan (Judy), along with many good friends.
Tom lived a life shaped by the things that he loved most: horses, lifelong friendships, a little friendly competition and above all, his family.
In keeping with Tom’s wishes there will be no service. A family celebration of his life will be held in the spring.
The family would like to thank his entire medical team for all their excellent and compassionate care throughout his final journey. Their kindness and support were deeply appreciated.
