STEVEN RICHARD SCHMIDT

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our eldest son, Steven, a star that fell too soon. Brain cancer claimed him at 62, following his wife, Monica (Nee Massey), who was also taken early by cancer ten years earlier.

Steve is survived by his parents Greg and Juliette “Julie” Schmidt, son Adam (Emmalene), daughter Erika (Grant), brothers Michael, Philip (Christine), and David (Lynda); partner Kaye Kameron and a large extended family.

Steve was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He graduated as the Gold Medalist in Computer Science from the University of Manitoba in 1986 and then went on to a brilliant career with IBM in Toronto and then Microsoft in Washington State.

Steve loved to ski and tackled some of the most difficult slopes through helicopter and caterpillar skiing. He also served children as a respected ski instructor.

Steve left Washington State four years ago, moving to Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico where he generously supported university students and schoolchildren with gifts of computers, bicycles, and backpacks and by teaching English.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 10th at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, 2400 Portage Avenue at 1:30pm. Steven’s final resting place is at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.
