RONALD BRUCE GROOM

July 31, 1927 – August 3, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of (Ronald) Bruce Groom, on Saturday, August 3, 2019, at age 92.

Left to cherish Bruce’s memory are his sons Rick (Chris), Larry (Leslie), and Stacey (Sharon), and grandchildren Jonathon, Laina, Lauren, Brendan and Thomas. He is also survived by his sister Jessie; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Anita in 2012.

Bruce was born and raised in St. James and lived most of his life there. While working at Eaton’s downtown, he met and married Anita Hlady in September 1948, and the couple lived briefly in Toronto before returning to Winnipeg to start their family. They moved into the family home on Conway Street in 1960, where they lived for over 50 years. He greatly enjoyed his career with the Hudson’s Bay Company, where he worked for 32 years in various positions.

We will remember our father and grandpa as a great storyteller and lover of history, Frank Sinatra’s music and classic movies; especially It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. His cooking was an inspiration to his three sons and family – Bruce continued to make his famous homemade perogies and “police cookies” (cupcakes) until he was 91 years old. He enjoyed travelling; his trips with Anita to Europe, Minneapolis and to the cottage were particular favourites.

As per Bruce’s request, there will be no funeral service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that mourners make a donation to War Amps in his honour.
