Norman Edward Kornberger
October 16, 1935 – August 19, 2021

After a courageous battle with various ailments, it is with deep regret that we announce the death of Norman Edward Kornberger, on August 19, 2021, at Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, at the age of 85 years.

Norman was born and raised in Winnipeg, growing up in the North End, and lived for the last 59 years in St. Vital. He was the beloved husband of the late Cecile Kornberger [Chaney) of Yorkton, Sask., to whom he was married for 47 years.

He is survived by sons Bryan and Neil [Carmen]; grandchildren Erika (Shayn) and Stefanie; sister Marlene (Dennis) of Phoenix; sister-in-law Shirley (Darryle) of Vancouver; nieces Robyn (Rich) and Karen (Jeff); nephews Jeff, Craig and David; and many relatives, and friends. Norman was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Sophie.

Norman spent his childhood growing up on Salter Street in a house built by his grandfather, Jacob. He attended Machray and Isaac Newton schools and spent a year learning at Luther College in Regina. He played many different sports during his youth but had a special affection for basketball.

He was fortunate to meet a student, studying at St. Mary’s School of Nursing, at St. Boniface Hospital, and he and Cecile were married on October 12, 1957.
At this time, he also began working for the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission, eventually becoming a purchasing agent, and retired from there in 1994. He greatly valued the friendships formed working for the MLCC.

Norman’s favourite “hobbies” were saying his rosary and watching EWTN’s televised Mass, calling his sister Marlene, talking about cars, and watching sports on TV. He really enjoyed the NBA and was a big Winnipeg Blue Bomber and Jet fan. He also treasured being able to watch and be proud of the exploits of Erika and Stefanie as they grew up. And he was a great “hockey/basketball dad” for Neil, and an invaluable supporter of Bryan’s coaching career.
In addition, it must be stated how important Norman’s neighbours were to him, and to Norm and Cecile when they were together: these families were the biggest reason he/they never moved from their home.

A Funeral Mass for Norman will be celebrated at 10 AM on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Saint Vital Catholic Church, 1629 Pembina Highway. Concelebrants will be Fr. Mark A. Tarrant and Fr. Moise Adossou. It will also be “live streamed” at “stvitalparish.ca”. Norman will be interred at St. Vital Cemetery, 236 River Road.

Norman’s family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff of Saint Boniface, Victoria, and Grace Hospitals for their amazing care and support: you helped keep Norman going for so long. In addition, thank you to all the “home care” workers for their big hearts and respect. A thanks, as well, to Diana, who made a huge difference every couple of weeks, and to Rita, for looking out for Norman in his closing days and moments at the Grace.

A special thanks to all who prayed for Norman in his time of need. And, most importantly, a huge thanks to God for His mercy and providence, and for giving us such a special dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend.

In lieu of flowers, a donation could be made to a charity of one’s choice.
