Left to cherish Nick’s memory are his daughter Carol (John) Vermeer; sisters Mary Pitz, Winnie Woroniuk, Betty Guenther, Gina Rice; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis Joyce Holunga (West) in 2004; parents Nestor and Irena Holunga; brothers George, Willie, John and Alfred, and sister Vera. On March 2, 1923 Dad was born in Shell Valley, MB. He was a Gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery during the Second World War, serving in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He had many occupations throughout his life, ultimately joining the Winnipeg School Division #1 as a custodian in the early 1970s, retiring in 1988. Dad enjoyed baseball, curling, the outdoors, music and tinkering in his workshop – he was creative and artistic. He played the violin and harmonica, and took part in Folklorama in the 1970s and 1980s at the Romanian Pavilion. He loved animals and a good laugh. Dad was a kind, gentle man who always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye.
