Muriel Arlyne Whitley (née Johnson)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Muriel Arlyne Whitley, our cherished wife, mom, grandma, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Muriel passed peacefully on the morning of October 9, 2026, at 77 years young.
Muriel had the warmest smile and a contagious laugh. Compassionate and caring, she was also witty, down-to-earth, and full of life. She treasured her family and friends, always making time for a phone call, a visit, a lunch date, or a shopping trip. It was these everyday moments and connections that made her so special to the people who loved her.
Muriel grew up on a farm in Ashern, Manitoba. Known affectionately to many as Merlie, she was the youngest of her siblings and the apple of her father’s (Barney) eye. She shared a special bond with her brothers, Terry (Marilyn) and Reg, and held a deep love for her mom, (Mickey), whose guidance, teachings, and love helped shape the person she became.
Muriel and her husband, Ken, raised their daughters, Alanna and Lori, in Grosse Isle, Manitoba, where they lived for many years. She moved into Winnipeg in later years where she continued to be a devoted and loving mom who carried that same unconditional love into her role as a grandma. Her three granddaughters, Leah Morgan, Ruby, and Winter, were a tremendous source of joy and pride in her life.
Muriel was very proud of her long and successful career with MTS. Along the way, she built friendships that extended well beyond the workplace, turning many of her colleagues into lifelong friends. She treasured the memories and connections she made throughout those years.
Her love of travel took her across Canada and the United States, as well as overseas to Scotland and Ireland. One especially meaningful journey brought her to Iceland to meet relatives and connect with her family roots.
Sparks flew when family came to visit. There were unforgettable laughs and good times always had when a Johnson family reunion, birthday or anniversary party was happening.
Muriel will be deeply missed by her loving husband, Ken; her daughters, Alanna and Lori; and her beloved granddaughters, Leah Morgan, Ruby, and Winter. She also leaves behind her brother, Terry (Marilyn); nieces Jennifer (Ken), Diana (Doug), and Terri-Lynn (Terry); and nephew Cory (Shiela), along with many other family members and dear friends who will hold her memory close.
We welcome your messages, memories, and stories of Muriel, and invite family and friends to join us in celebrating her life on Monday, November 23rd, at 5:00-9:00pm, at the Charleswood Legion, 6003 Roblin Boulevard, Winnipeg.
As Merlie would say, “See you later, alligator”
