A. MAY JOHNSTON

 (NEE KING)

March 2, 1924 – July 16, 2018

On Monday, July 16, 2018, at the age of 94 years, May Johnston passed away peacefully at West Park Manor.

Mom will be dearly missed by her loving children Jack Johnston, Jim Johnston (Lynda), Beverley Blomert (Dave), and Barbara Lobb (John), as well as 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her sister and partner-in-crime, Jean Birch (Tony).  She was predeceased by her devoted husband Bill; her brothers Bob King and Jimmy King, and sister Wynn MacDiarmid.

Mom was born in Ogilvie, Manitoba but raised in her beloved Woodhaven. She attended St. James Collegiate where she was an avid athlete, having participated in speed skating, basketball, and track and field. She was always very proud of her accomplishment of being named the Athlete of the Year in 1942.

On August 23, 1947, Mom and Dad were joined in matrimony and embarked on their 70-year journey together. She was a devoted mother who loved to watch her kids in arenas and choirs, and always supported them in each of their activities. Mom had a very active social life and greatly enjoyed her close circle of friends, who thought of her as the life of the party. She could always be found on the dance floor at the numerous functions they attended together.

After working for her brother Bob at King’s Florist, she purchased the business on her own in the mid-1970s. Mom was exceptionally proud of her accomplishments at “the shop” and the respected reputation that it developed. Mom also enjoyed spending time in the summer at the family cottage in Sioux Narrows, where she would swim, play, and garden with her family. One of her favourite activities was morning snuggles in her bed with her grandchildren where singing lessons could be heard throughout the cottage.  It was also the place where bats did not exist, whip cream fights were acceptable, and a can of Raid could kill anything.

Mom spent her later years being an active Nan and Nana to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always so proud of all of their accomplishments. She will be missed dearly by all who were lucky enough to know her.

A private family gathering to celebrate her life will take place on Saturday, July 21, 2018.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to a charity of their choice.
