MAUREEN NEWSOME

(nee WHALEN)

Peacefully surrounded by family, Maureen passed into the arms of the Lord on November 10, 2020, in the St. Boniface General Hospital Intensive Care Cardiac Sciences – Asper Institute.

Born in northern England (August 01, 1927), she was the daughter of Emily and David Whalen. She was predeceased by the love of her life George, her precious daughter June (Darrell), stepdaughter Cathy, her brothers Jack, David, Dennis, her twin Tony, sisters Joan and Norah.

She is survived by her daughter Angeline Glowa, stepson Paul Newsome (Claire), Grandson Brad Nechwediuk (Anndrea), Granddaughter Marnie Minkus (Ryan), and Great Grandkids Ryland, Katelyn, Owen and Chloe.

Maureen started her journey to Canada in 1947 via the RMS Queen Elizabeth. She landed in New York City and travelled by train to Winnipeg, where she married and then set roots in Endeavour, Saskatchewan. Moving to Winnipeg in 1955, she built a wonderful life with her two daughters. During this time, she worked tirelessly as a Hairdresser and also as a Pharmacist Assistant at the Manitoba Clinic until she retired in 1980. Maureen loved the Opera and hearing her twin brother sing to her. Her love of music brought her to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, where she volunteered for 40 years.

Maureen met the love of her life George Newsome in 1978/79 spending many wonderful years in their house on West Fernwood Avenue. George treated Maureen as if she were a Queen, always making sure she was taken care of and all her needs were being met. They enjoyed many trips together including multiple visits with Maureen’s family in England.

Maureen lived for her Grandchildren and Great Grandkids with all her heart and enjoyed baking and cooking for them until she was 92 years old.

Maureen will be remembered for all the things that make the world a better place: kindness, generosity, humility, and compassion. She was known as NANA by everyone, and her everlasting smile and bright blue eyes drew everyone to her. Maureen touched many hearts, and she will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.

There will be no formal funeral due to Covid 19 restrictions; the family will hold a celebration of life at a later date.

The family would like to thank the staff at Catherine’s Place and the many friends and relatives Maureen cherished throughout her journey.

A huge thank you to nurse Roanna for her unwavering care during the last few days of Maureen’s life.

Nana will be in our hearts forever, flying high above the clouds watching over us for all the days ahead, and shining down on us like a twinkling star.
