MARGARET SQUIRE

February 13, 2012

MARGARET ELIZABETH SQUIRE (nee WHALEY) August 17, 1929 February 13, 2012 Suddenly, on Monday, February 13, 2012, Margaret was taken from us at the age of 82 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Shelagh Jennifer Squire; son-in-law Douglas Fisher and granddaughter Blythe Elizabeth Squire-Fisher of Twyford, Berkshire, England. She was predeceased by her husband, Alan Squire; and her parents William Kenneth and Bessie (Conner) Whaley. Born in Walkerville, Ontario, Margaret spent a happy childhood in Merrickville, Ontario. She was a graduate of the Kingston General Hospital (KGH) School of Nursing, class of 1952 and undertook additional study in Pediatric Nursing at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She was a Pediatric Nurse at KGH and the Grace Hospital in Halifax. Margaret met Alan when visiting friends in Victoria, BC, then met him again in Halifax where he was stationed with the Royal Canadian Navy. They married in 1958 and when Alan left active naval service, settled in Winnipeg. Prior to becoming a stay-at-home mother, Margaret was supervisor of the nurseries at the Old Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. She was a loving and devoted wife and mom, active in Riverview United Church and the Riverview community and, with Alan, in the Naval Officers Association of Canada. She loved knitting and baking and was teaching those skills to her cherished granddaughter, most recently while visiting England at Christmas 2011. Margaret was a caring aunt, kind friend and good neighbour, unstinting in the thoughtfulness and practical help she showed to others throughout her life. On Wednesday, April 4, 2012, a Service to celebrate Margaret’s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue at Sharp Boulevard. We extend sincere thanks to the members of the Winnipeg Emergency Services who cared for our beloved mom and Nana, and to the family and friends who have been such a support to us at this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a memorial donation in Margaret’s name may be made to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation, Pediatric Program, 366 King St. E, Suite 201, Kingston, ON K7K 6Y3, attention Suzanne Beek (telephone 1-613-549-5452, extension 5913).   As published in the Winnipeg Free Press on March 31, 2012
