It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Margaret Penny who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the age of 95 years with her family at her side at the Fred Douglas Personal Care home where she had resided since November 2015.   Margaret is survived by her daughter Jean Hartle (Jim) of Winnipeg, Manitoba; son Jack Penny (Sandy) of Sherkston, Ontario; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Penny, Notre Dame de Lourdes, Manitoba; son Darryl Penny (Val) of Altamont, Manitoba and son Myles Penny (Jenny) of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Mom often said that she had the most gorgeous grandchildren and they are Paige Hartle (Billy), Cole Hartle (Meagan), Sean Penny (April), Miranda Penny-Gulan (Joanne), Kara Paterson (Ross), Shauna Penny (Henry), Kyle Penny (Krystle), Scott Penny and Shelley Penny.  Mom has three great-grandchildren, Kylie Gulan, Kaileigh Penny and Evren Penny.  She is also survived by her sister Grace Doupe of St. Catharines, Ontario; sister-in-law Lillian Sangster and several nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Edwin John Penny (Ted) in 1975 and long-time companion Alex Meikle in 1997 as well as by her parents William and Mary Sangster; brothers Jim, Doug and Bill Sangster and sister Janet Clace.   Margaret was born in Neepawa, Manitoba. She joined the army in 1942 and was discharged in 1945.  Mom always said that her experience in the army was one of the greatest times in her life and she was very proud to be a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.  Mom met dad in Shilo, they married in 1944 and moved to Virden, Manitoba where they lived and raised their family. Mom left Virden, leaving behind many good friends, and moved to Winnipeg in 1996. In Winnipeg, she had the good fortune of meeting and becoming fast friends with Jean Deans. Mom and Mrs. Deans were neighbours for 18 years and continued to keep in touch with nightly phone calls to check in with each other right up to the end.   On Monday May 29, 2017 Margaret’s Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue @ Sharp Boulevard with Rev. Dr. Paul Peters Derry presider with lunch to follow. Interment will follow at a date to be determined in the future in Virden, Manitoba.   A very special thank you to the staff at Fred Douglas Lodge.  Everyone was so fantastic in their loving care of mom helping her maintain dignity until the end.   In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Fred Douglas Society in Mom’s memory would be greatly appreciated. Wojcik’s Funeral Chapels & Crematoriums, Winnipeg, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665 www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com
