JOSEPH ALBERT GECHEL

January 16, 1933 – November 12, 2019

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, husband, and grandfather, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Joe is survived by his loving wife Colleen (nee Huntley) of 64 years; his children Brenda Boychuk (Tim), Shauna Butters (Ross Teague), Brad (Michele Rupert) and his six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and his five sisters.

Born and raised in Picture Butte, Alberta, Joe met Colleen at a community dance and were married in Fort Macleod, Alberta in 1955. Joe enjoyed a successful career of 39 years in sales and marketing with one company in the paper industry. His career took him from Lethbridge to Edmonton, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, and back to Winnipeg, the city that Joe and his family treasure so dearly.

Throughout Joe’s life, he was an enthusiast of all sports, both as a participant and as a spectator. He was a long-time active member of both Breezy Bend Country Club and the Pembina Curling Club, as well as an avid fisherman. Joe’s passion for sports and activities included social golf with Colleen and his family, and the introduction of many sports to his children. He loved socializing with friends and family. Family was important to Joe and his passion for his grandchildren was often seen with him on all fours playing with his grandkids when they were young. His circle of friends was extensive, and he treasured the time he spent with them. His wine making was legendary.

Upon retirement, Joe and Colleen travelled extensively, including winter vacations in Arizona and Texas, and other parts all over the world. Joe will always be remembered for the love and support he showed to his family; and in particular, his grandkids, Cassandra, Ashley, Stephanie, Liam, Ella, and Luke.

A service will be held at the Westwood Presbyterian Church, 197 Browning Boulevard on Monday November 18, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.
