JOHN SCOLLIN

October 6, 1927 - March 2, 2015

THE HONOURABLE JOHN AMBROSE SCOLLIN, Q.C, L.L.B.

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He died peacefully, at the age of 87, in the company of his loving wife, on Saturday, March 21, 2015.
John will be remembered forever by his wife of 64 years of marriage, Rita (nee McGregor), son John, daughter Lorraine, granddaughter Caitlin and grandson Sean, great-grandson, Cairo as well as many dear friends and colleagues.
On October 6, 1927John was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He attended The University of Edinburgh, winning the Vans Dunlop Scholarship and graduating with honours. John and Rita were married in 1950. After a short service as legal counsel with the British army he served as a Magistrate in Tanzania for 3 years. John and Rita came to Canada in 1953, to Winnipeg, where John was a prosecutor for the City of Winnipeg and later a partner with the law firm Pitblado Hoskins. John moved with his family to Ottawa in 1966 and John became the Assistant Deputy Attorney General for the Federal Department of Justice. He was a member of the Bar and practiced in six Canadian provinces, often appearing in the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1981 he was appointed to the Queen?s Bench of Manitoba and served as a Judge until his retirement in 1999.
John?s friends and colleagues knew him as fiercely loyal and exceptionally hard working. He saw the irony and humour in all things and never feared to speak his mind. His love of the law was second only to his love for his family, who treasured him for the tremendously sentimental and generous spirit he always was.
Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 1:00 p.m., in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant and Rev. Msgr. Ward Jamieson, presiding.
The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors on the third floor of the Grace Hospital (especially Karen) for their respectful and sensitive care, and all the staff of the Court of Queen?s Bench in Winnipeg for their friendship and courtesy over many years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
