JOHN GLOWA

March 2, 1920 – September 28, 2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of John Glowa on September 28, 2020 at the age of 100 years.

John was born and raised in Gimli, working on the family farm until enlisting in the Army. He was stationed at Signal Hill in Esquimalt, British Columbia where he was trained in auto mechanics. He returned to Gimli and on August 19, 1944, married Cecilia Lenchuk. They moved to Victoria, British Columbia, but returned to Winnipeg after the war ended.

With the help of friends and relatives, they built their first home in St. James, where they lived for 35 years and raised their six children. John’s garage door was always open to fix neighbours and relatives’ cars and he spent countless hours trouble shooting car problems over the phone.

John’s auto mechanic career includes owing a Shell Service Station at Portage Avenue and Wall Street in the 1960’s and working at Russel Motors, Westport Chrysler, Century Motors, and Piston Ring. He also enjoyed gardening both at home and in Gimli, on the family homestead.

John and Cecilia were founding parishioners of St. Paul the Apostle Church. They were very involved helping with Bingo’s, funerals and other church functions where John became well known for making great coffee. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for 60 years, receiving many rewards.

He is predeceased by his wife Cecilia of 75 years, in December 2019, two sisters and five brothers. Left to celebrate his life are his children, Janet Kulferst (Randy), Brian Glowa (Karen), Dennis Glowa (Leslie), Susan Irvine (Jeff), Carolyn McNeil (Dave) and Lorie Glowa, as well as 15 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a sister, Sonia Patzel and sister-in-law, Mary Glowa, both of Winnipeg.

Many thanks to the staff on Towers four and six at Deer Lodge Center for their professional and compassionate care of our Dad.

Memorial tributes in memory of John may be made to Deer Lodge Centre Foundation.

A private family Funeral Mass and inurnment will be held October 6, 2020.
