A longer obituary will follow.IRIS THIRY February 3, 1926 – December 12, 2011 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Iris, peacefully, with her family at her side, on Monday, December 12, 2011. Left to forever cherish Iris’ memory will be her daughters Linda (Robert), Janet (Craig); son Bill (Rene); sister Eileen and her son Geoffrey; brothers Don (Beryl), Alan (Susan); grandchildren Tarena (Dean), Shawna (Chad), Nathan (Kirsten), Cory (Dawn), Gary; great-grandchildren Shelby, Tyler, Courteny, Brody, Noah, Paige; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bill. Iris was born in Poplar, County of London, England. She served in the NAAFI during the war. She was married in 1945 to Bill whom she later joined in Canada to raise a family. Iris worked for many years at Surgical Elastic, eventually buying and operating the business until her retirement. After retirement, she dedicated her life for over 15 years to volunteering, spending much time in schools in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division, particularly, Brooklands, Heritage, Lakewood and Crestview schools. There Iris touched the lives of many children as one of the beloved grandmas . She was also an active member in her church community and was nominated and recognized twice by Premier Gary Filmon for her volunteering efforts. Iris loved flowers and spent her summers gardening and growing different varieties of flowers. Her gardens were among the most beautiful in the neighbourhood with both perennials and annuals being nurtured daily throughout the summer. When traveling, she noted the beauty of the local flora before anything else. Iris was a generous, kind, compassionate person who was a source of inspiration for many that knew her well. She also could put a smile on anyone’s face as they listened to her adventures, especially if she was driving somewhere unfamiliar. We were never quite sure how she always missed the turn or the sign! Iris also enjoyed the odd trip to the casino with her friends from Hamilton House where she had lived for the past couple of years. She played a huge role in the life of her family, always putting the needs of her children and grandchildren first. Her passing will leave a void in our hearts and our lives.
