GERDA SCHMIDT

May 14, 2012

GERDA FLORENCE SCHMIDT (nee GIESBRECHT) March 21, 1941 – May 14, 2012 Peacefully and courageously, we share the passing of our mom, friend, sister, aunt, confidant, Gerda, on Monday, May 14, 2012 at the young age of 39+ some years old. Left to forever cherish Gerda’s memory are her son Kevin; daughter JoDee (Shaun); brother Bud (Marie) Giesbrecht; sister Lee Kiffiak; as well as many, many friends; nieces and nephews she held dear to her heart. She was predeceased by her parents; parents-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and the love of her life, George Schmidt. Gerda was born in Stuartburn, MB. Raised in Steinbach, and resided most of her adult life in Winnipeg. Her favourite way of relaxing was to be out with family and friends, and was always just a phone call away; (she still loved the phone). Laughter was her best relaxant and healer throughout her life. She was a putterer in the garden and loved her computer games, theatre and spending time at the lake. Gerda was always thinking of the next practical joke, and always on the hunt for those crazy birthday cards she could give to her adopted brothers . She was a woman of character, courage and conscience. As our mom would say; her childhood built her character, her marriage, children and illness built her courage, and her faith built her conscience. Live, Love and Laugh – three words that saw her through an interesting and eventful life! A life she said she would willingly repeat despite the odd glitch now and then. Gerda’s Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive, Winnipeg, MB. A special thanks to Dr. Rob Kippen, whom she knew for 33 years, a friend, a mentor, a comedian; one who gave a good hug and guidance when she needed it. Our family and friends would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Health Sciences Centre GH4 for all their care and kindness, and to Dr. Brian Penner for his soulful guidance and wisdom. Special hugs go out to her theatre group and the whole crew at A W Portage West Donations in Gerda’s memory may be made to the C.N.I.B. Reading Library, 1929 Bayview Ave., Toronto, ON M4G 3E8. After 31 years of marriage, and 18 years without her beloved George, Gerda can and will be dancing with him again. You’ve been loyal and true, from beginning to end, not just as husband but dear as a friend. Words cannot tell how much I love you. Through thick and thin, my whole life thru. For today and tomorrow with you by my side. Come hell or high water our love will abide xxxoooo Gerda   As published in the Winnipeg Free Press on May 19, 2012
