GERALD (GERRY) CAIRNS

Gerald (Gerry) Cairns passed away peacefully on June 8, 2023.  He was born September 21, 1933, in Morden, Manitoba.  Gerry is survived by his loving wife Lorraine of 65 plus years. Sister, Joanne of Portland, Oregon.  He was predeceased by Mother, Kate and Father, Jack, and Brothers, Barry and Marvyn.

Gerry was a Photographer and Photo Editor at the Winnipeg Free Press for 40 years.  He loved his job.  He excelled in photographing scenes and people from all walks of life.  He photographed major sporting events, news events, political dignitaries from Manitoba and other parts of Canada.  He had a special interest in the Arts Community and, in particular, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.  In 1977, he was invited to Clarence House in London, England to present to Her Majesty, The Queen Mother, a book of photographs taken by Gerry of the Royal Tours of her children and grandchildren on their several visits to Canada.  He was involved in Amateur Theatre for many years, building sets and working backstage.  His greatest love was the cottage he and Lorraine owned at Nutimik Lake in the Whiteshell for 50 plus years.

He loved to travel.  He and Lorraine spent many winters in Bucerias, Mexico and in Ferrerias, The Algarve in Portugal.  They also went on several ocean and river cruises in Europe.

Gerry’s favorite beverage was a Manhattan, and his favorite past time was growing flowers and house plants.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity.
