Ernest (Ernie) John Wilkie
Ernest John Wilkie, known to most as Ernie, passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 92.
Ernie and his wife Joan were married for 70 years until her passing in April 2026. Together, they raised three children: Allan (Beverly), Karen (Doug), and Kelly (Ed). Their family continued to grow over the years to include seven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren, who brought Ernie great joy and pride. He was predeceased by his parents, Dick and Etta; his sister, Evelyn; his son, Al; and his granddaughter, Laura.
Born in Carberry, Manitoba, Ernie spent most of his adult life in Winnipeg. He enjoyed a long career with Canadian Indemnity, where he worked as a Claims Manager until his retirement in 1984. Retirement gave Ernie the opportunity to pursue another of his interests—cars. He enjoyed buying and selling automobiles through his business as an automobile broker. He also took great pleasure in woodworking and could often be found working on one project or another.
In his younger years, Ernie enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. He also took up curling, and then floor curling, enjoying both the competition and the camaraderie that came with them. His love of baseball and curling stayed with him throughout his life, and he continued to enjoy watching them on television.
Ernie was a longtime resident of St. James. In later years, he lived at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence before moving to Oakview Personal Care Home.
Ernie’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the many friends, family members, and care staff who supported him and were an important part of his life over the years. Their kindness and care are deeply appreciated.
At Ernie’s request, no funeral service is planned.
