February 10, 2012

ELSIE STERNER 1923 – 2012 Peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2012, our mother passed away at Heritage Lodge Personal Care Home at the age of 88 years. Left to forever cherish Elsie’s memory is son, Bob (Janice); daughter, Marlene (Dave); grandchildren, Amber (Brad), Marnie, Kevin (Jolene), Shelley (Ian); great-grandchildren, Cole, Connor, Matthew, Cameron, Ashley and Isabella; sister Kaye; brother Jack (Mary) and their families; as well as by her sister-in-law Edna; nieces; nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Julia; husband, Wally; brothers George and Norman; sisters Teenie and Irene. Elsie was born on September 5, 1923, to Jacob and Julia Mattes and grew up in the North End with her brothers, George, Norman, Jack and sisters Teenie, Irene and Kaye. As a young girl out of high school Mum worked at Monarch Industries as a seamstress. She loved to sew and made all of her children’s clothes during their young years. Mum met our dad, Wally, and they were married in 1945. When Dad died in 1967, our mother went to work at Eaton’s and retired in 1988. She belonged to a card group of 12 neighbourhood friends, known as The Birthday Club and each member took turns having the Birthday party at their homes. Mum enjoyed being a hostess and she treated all her guests like royalty using her finest dinnerware and crystal for these special occasions. Christmas Eve was another very special occasion with family and relatives where homemade sausage and Christmas baking was enjoyed by all. One of Mum’s enjoyments was travelling with her sister Teenie and family to Las Vegas, and Hawaii, as well as, spending time at Gull Lake. She also enjoyed playing cards, bingo and visiting casinos. In keeping with Elsie’s wishes no Funeral will be held. The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Lodge for their compassion and professional care our mother received during her stay. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart Stroke Foundation, 2006 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Rest in Peace, Mum   As published in the Winnipeg Free Press on February 18, 2012
