ELIZABETH (BETTY) THORNDYCRAFT

It is with heavy hearts that we say good-bye to our Mom, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

Mom was born in Tet, Hungary on October 13, 1935. She fled Hungary in 1956 with only the clothes on her back and a small suitcase filled with treasures that she eventually had to sell for food for herself and her toddler son, Les. She had many great stories of their escape and how they eventually landed in Halifax, Montreal and finally in Winnipeg.

She was a loving mother to Les (Sherri), Gabe (Joanne) and Cathie (Bob); grandmother to Angie (Dave), Maddy, Nicole (Chris), Ellen, and Megan (Alex) and Sarah; great-grandmother to Alex and Charlotte. She also has stepchildren Vince and Tina in Vancouver. Mom lost her husband Syd in 2017.

Mom worked for a short while at the Women’s Hospital and eventually went to work for herself in her cleaning business up until four years ago. There, she met many wonderful people who loved her as much as she loved them. She took great pride in her appearance and always dressed going to work as if she was the CEO of a Winnipeg business.

Mom was a dedicated mother; she was a fierce protector of her children when they were young. She met Syd Thorndycraft in 1979 and they married a few years later. They loved to go camping, fishing, riding their motorcycle across the country; and they also loved to listen to jazz music.

Mom loved to watch her grandchildren at their sporting activities and dramatic performances. She would watch the River West Park annual track meet from her backyard, cheering for her granddaughters. Mom‘s eyes would light up when we would be bring little Charlotte for visits!!  She also was loved by Brooksie!

Mom will be missed by all who knew her; she was a warm and wonderful person.

Our family would like to thank the amazing staff on 4AB at Actionmargeurite (St. Boniface). We are eternally grateful for the wonderful care and compassion that they offered our Mom and family.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to a charity of your choice.

A private family service and cremation will take place.
