Edith “Joan” Wilkie (née Chalmers)
Edith Joan Wilkie, known to most as Joan, passed away on 25 April 2026, at the age of 94, with family at her side.
Joan was married to her husband, Ernie, for 70 years. Together they raised three children: Allan (Beverly), Karen (Doug), and Kelly (Ed). Their family grew to include seven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents Kay and Kelly, her sister Marg, her son Al, and her granddaughter Laura.
Joan was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, though she spent most of her adult life in Winnipeg, where she built a life centered on family, friendship, and community. She found great fulfillment in her work as a nurse, a career that suited her caring nature.
For many years, Joan was a resident of St. James. She later lived at Sturgeon Creek Retirement Residence before moving to Oakview Personal Care Home.
She valued her time spent with family and cherished staying connected with loved ones, as well as socializing with many friends that she had throughout her life. She took great pride in tending to her garden on Deer Lodge Place, and friends and family delighted in the harvests she generously shared. Her dill pickles were the best! Time at the cottage, girls’ trips to Las Vegas, dominoes, and bridge club all kept Joan busy. Joan was kind and quick-witted, with a heart of gold and a twinkle in her eye.
Joan’s family extends sincere thanks to the friends, family, and care staff all who were such an important part of her life.
At Joan’s request, no funeral service is planned.
