DAVID SMIEL

May 28, 2012

DAVID SMIEL It is with deep regret that we announce the death of David Smiel, on Monday, May 28, 2012, in Winnipeg. David was the husband of the late Ava Smiel. He is survived by his daughter Susan Smiel (Rafael Reyes). My Father was born in Cluj, Romania on May 31, 1923. He lived through the Great Depression and survived the concentration camps of the Second World War. He met my mother Ava, in Austria, and they married in October 1947. Like many other Second World War survivors, they immigrated to Canada in 1948. Here he began his new life. David worked as a furrier, working for Neaman Fur/Sterling Stall until he retired. A man of few words, my Father loved my mother deeply and was content to live an unassuming life. His one recreation was horse racing and he was a fixture at Assiniboia Downs. He loved those ponies! After my Mother’s death, he spent his last years at The Sharon Home-Simkin Centre. In compliance with my father’s wishes there will be no Funeral Service. Thank you to the staff for their care and kindness, particularly Helen, Donna, Lucy, Ramon and Olga. I know he appreciated the care and attention. Rest in peace Dad. You can finally stop worrying!Publish Date: Jun 2, 2012DAVID SMIEL On Monday, May 28, 2012, David died at the Simkin Centre at the age of 89 years.
