CAROLYN SHAW

March 18, 2012

CAROLYN JEAN SHAW (nee FREIHEIT) Carolyn’s family is heartbroken to announce her passing on March 18, 2012 at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, at the age of 69 years. Remaining to forever cherish Carolyn’s memory are her beloved family Jackie Shaw and her fiancé Dustin Furst, Linda Stevens (Thomas), Bruce Shaw, Casey Shaw (Christina); grandchildren Brandon and Dylan Stevens, and Dustin’s children, Ela and Rowan; sister Marlene Streu (Bruno); brother Garnet Freiheit (Kathy); aunt Teena Wilkie; as well as many close nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband Cal Shaw; infant son Christopher; parents Art and Marie Freiheit; brothers Derry Freiheit and Ernie Freiheit. Carolyn was born in Dauphin on December 7, 1942 to Arthur and Marie Freiheit. After high school, she moved to Winnipeg and graduated as a Registered Nurse from Misericordia Hospital. She had a fulfilling career as a nurse, educator, case coordinator, director of nursing, and hospital administrator. Carolyn gave all of herself to patients, their families, nurses and doctors at St. Boniface and Beausejour hospitals for 35 years. After traveling to Europe, Japan and the Caribbean, Carolyn married Cal Shaw in 1975 and became stepmother to Casey, Linda and Bruce. Jackie joined the family in 1979. Everyone who was touched by Carolyn in this life was blessed by her compassion, warmth, sense of fun and laughter. She welcomed her children’s friends as extensions of her family. Carolyn’s nieces and nephews knew her as Auntie LaLa – named before they could manage to pronounce Carolyn. She treated her friends like family, and her family like precious gems. Carolyn was selfless in giving to her community, the medical profession and all who knew her. Sadly, Carolyn struggled with serious health issues in recent years. Through it all, she showed us courage, independence, humour, and above all, love. She also boldly shared her opinions and we respected that part of her too. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant officiating. Interment will follow the Liturgy in Transcona Cemetery, 5014 Dugald Road at Perimeter Highway. We are eternally grateful for the dignity and exquisite care provided by the people at St. Boniface Hospital during the last two months, especially the 7th floor nurses and Dr. Yaffe (who Carolyn trained in the operating room years ago – so he was on his toes.) We gratefully decline flowers, and ask that memoriam donations be made in Carolyn’s name to the Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, Winnipeg, MB R3B 1M3, or the Children’s Wish Foundation, 350 St. Mary Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 3J2.   As published in the Winnipeg Free Press on March 24, 2012
