RET. CAPTAIN BRUCE HAROLD WOOD

Captain (ret) Bruce Harold Wood died peacefully at Oakview Place Extendicare on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 88 years.

Bruce was predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years Muriel Mae Wood (nee Calder); parents Guy Nathan Wood and Ethel Wood (nee Bryan) and by his brothers Nathan J. Wood, Leslie A. Wood, and Robert L Wood. He is survived by his sister Eva J. Brown (nee Wood); his three children Robyn Leslie Van Vliet (Jeff), Dan Bruce Wood, and Mark Jeffrey Wood (Irene) as well as his two grandchildren Mitchell Bruce Van Vliet and Christopher Michael Van Vliet. They will greatly miss his sharp wit and endless stories

Bruce was born on November 6, 1930 in Windsor Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in December 1949 and spent 33 years with the military rising to the rank of Captain. He married Muriel on July 18, 1953 and they spent 44 happy years together until her death in 1997. During Bruce’s time in the military, he and his family spent time in a number of interesting locations, including Ottawa Ontario, Fort Churchill Manitoba, North Bay Ontario, Val D’Or Quebec, Great Falls Montana, Winnipeg Manitoba, and in the Black Forest area of Germany. He was an avid history buff and traveller. During his retirement he visited many American Civil War Battlefields, a keen interest of his. He also researched and wrote the Wood family genealogy.

Bruce will be cremated and be laid to rest in a private graveside service beside his wife at future date.

A very special thank you to the nurses and staff of the Oakview Place Extendicare for the excellent and loving care given to Bruce during his time with them.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Bruce’s name to Alzheimer’s Canada https://alzheimer.ca/en/Home would be greatly appreciated.
