December 26, 2011

ALMA OLIVER (nee SMITH) July 13, 1937 – December 26, 2011 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our loving Mother, Alma Oliver on Monday, December 26, 2011 at the age of 74 years. Left to forever cherish Alma’s memories are her children, Roberta, Connie, Pam (Paul), Darlene (Jack), Joy (John) and Derwin; grandchildren, Shaun (Nadine), Stacey (Sean), Kristi (Rodney), Rian, Crystal (Charleton), Paxton, Paige, Shawn, Amber (Chris), Melissa (Jason), Jack, Hailey, Tara, Kris (Sam), Cody (Jessica), Kirby, Jordan; ten great-grandchildren; siblings, Irene, Edna (Art), Oakley (Pat); sister-in-law Deidre; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and special companions Angel and Chico. She was predeceased by her father George; mother Sarah; sister Donalda, and brothers Bud and Hughie. Mom was raised in the Meadow-Lea community where she spent her early years. During that time she enjoyed playing baseball and received recognition 50 years later along with her Meadow-Lea Ladies Softball Teammates. While raising her family, mom loved to sing and play guitar. She entertained in the Interlake area, participated in local talent shows, and could be heard occasionally on the radio. Moving to Winnipeg in the 1970s, mom showed her compassion and care for others while employed at Tache Nursing Home. Fishing, camping, gardening, crocheting, and traveling were a few of mom’s great joys in life. The ultimate highlight of her life was spending time with her family. In compliance with Alma’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held in her honour. The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Riverview Health Centre 3E for all their care and compassion for our Mother during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alma’s memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 1160-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9.   As published in the Winnipeg Free Press on December 31, 2011
