ALICE EVELYN MOORE

We are saddened to announce the passing of Alice Evelyn Moore (nee Cooper) on February 17, 2020, at the age of 90.

Alice was born December 13, 1929, in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba, to Alexander Cooper and Alice Ivy Hill Cooper. She grew up on the family farm south of town, moving to Winnipeg when she was 15 years old to complete high school.
Alice attended Business College and worked for a number of years before marrying John Henry Moore (Jack) on August 29, 1952. Together they raised four children in St. Vital.
Mum was always organized and busy cooking, canning, sewing and baking and orchestrating the annual summer family camping trip, which took us all over North America. She later allowed that these trips were, not surprisingly, more fun for us kids than they were for her! She much preferred more civilized travel with Dad once we kids were on our own.
Reading was a life-long pastime. The weekly trip to the library was rarely missed. Mum took great pleasure in singing in the choir and musical theatre at Regent’s Park United Church. She valued numerous 60-plus year friendships through her involvement there.
She always had a welcome for her kids’ friends, whether from the neighbourhood or visiting from far away. The cookie tin was never empty.
Mum later landed her dream job at W.H. Smith Books and enjoyed a number of years working there. Mum volunteered with Home and School, at the Church, and was a dedicated canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society, eventually taking over as Zone Chairperson. She was honoured by the Cancer Society for over 30 years of service.
In later years, Mum and Dad attended military reunions in Holland and elsewhere, cruised the Caribbean and the coastal waters of BC, visited Brazil, Portugal, the UK and St. Pierre et Miquelon and relaxed in the Bahamas and Hawaii. After Dad’s death, Mum travelled to the UK, Australia, Arizona and enjoyed a cruise through the Panama Canal.
She was pleased to watch her grandchildren grow up, and was always interested in their achievements. Mum was especially thrilled with becoming a great- grandmother twice over.
Until very recently when she began to suffer from mobility problems, Mum took pleasure in family get together, dinners out, and pretty much any dessert ever created.
Mum was predeceased by her parents; younger brother Leonard Cooper (1971) and by Dad in 1995. She is survived by her children, Colleen (Fernando) of Sandy Lake, MB, David (Barbara) of Winnipeg, Sandra of Winnipeg and Gordon (Marg) of Geelong, Australia. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Peter (Krista), William (Krystina; Miller and Mason), Tracey (Nick), Sean (Rose) and Alex. She is also survived by her nephew Lionel Moore (Fran); niece Terry Moore; nephews, Jeff and Graham Cooper; sister-in-law, Sandra Dirom and special cousins, Camille Hill and Eileen Allen; as well as other family in the UK and Canada.
The family would like to extend our deepest thanks to Alice’s wonderful caregivers and community of friends at Seine River Retirement Residence, her friends from church, the dedicated physicians and staff at CancerCare Manitoba, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and the fourth floor staff at the Victoria Hospital. A special thanks to her long-time physician Dr. Robyn Olson for her care over the past 27 years.
According to Mum’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at St Mary’s Road United Church at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society Manitoba, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the ALS Society of Manitoba or to a charity of your choice.
